One of the highlights of visiting my family in the northwest is the opportunity to play May-I.* My family has been playing this game literally for generations. At least my folks were playing it with my grandparents for longer than I can remember. We all have our little traditions while playing. My sister kisses the air when she pulls a joker, I pull a card quickly when there is one I really need, My mom is constantly convinced that her current hand is the worst one she's ever had.
Shanna and I both enjoy playing card games and have done our part to spread the May-I? revolution as best we can to our other friends and family. Although it never occured to me to get a May-I group together back when I first met Shanna in college. It is probably for the best, I taught her Gin Rummy and we've stopped playing since she beats me every time.
*The rules at the link are surprisingly close to what my family plays. The only difference I saw was the scoring, we play jokers are 50 points, aces 25 points, 10-king are 10 points and 2-9 are 5 points.
