Shanna+Aaron_AfterCapping
Ahh, young scientists in love. Here our protagonists, Aaron and Shanna, fresh out of grad school are ready to take on the world with nothing but a rented academic hood and 6 crates full of arcane chemical knowledge. Actually, I'm misleading you, fair reader. This picture is from one year ago. I've already been working for a year in industry and Shanna, interested in an academic career lined up a postdoc position she's excited about at a relatively nearby institution. We're fortunate to live in an area with employment opportunities for both of us. Her commute will be 24 miles, mine a comfortable 8. Although both of our backgrounds are in chemistry we took different paths in grad school. My graduate work is in physical chemistry while Shanna's is in inorganic chemistry. Navigating two closely coupled scientific careers is tricky. In many ways your Ph.D. limits your employment flexibility. Solving the two-body problem requires creativity, compromise, and understanding... Oh, and a blog.
