Mom, Ezra, and Aunt Eileen enjoying lunch

Ezra escorted four generations of family (including himself) out to lunch the other day. Aunt Eileen is my mother's aunt. It was his first real restaurant experience and he did quite well. We enjoyed hearing all of Aunt Eileen's stories describing her experiences having children. I think she was in awe of all the gizmos mothers have nowadays. Like my very hip nursing cape. Even the car seat and stroller. She described how back when she had kids the grocery carts didn't have any way to hold the baby so mothers often left the babies in the prams outside the store while they went in to get stuff. If it wasn't so dangerous and illegal now, boy, does that sound much easier than hauling a crying baby through the store. And how when driving in a car, the baby was just plopped in wherever convenient. Now, I have to lug around a very heavy carseat (or rather heavy baby in a carseat) and deal with all the straps, etc. to buckle him in. I'm not so sure that all these gizmos, etc. are making our lives all that more easier as mothers. No matter where or when you have kids, motherhood is no easy task!
