Several weeks ago we went in for our major ultrasound exam. At one point in the exam the technician adjusted some settings on the ultrasound instrument and took an image of the arteries and vein that comprise the umbilical cord showing up on the screen in red and blue. As a physical chemist with a background in imaging, this caught my attention. So I asked the technician if the false color image was obtained using the Doppler effect. After a few seconds of a blank stare at me, the technician responded, "Nobody has ever asked me about the Doppler effect before." I was stunned. What! Nobody! Come on world, help me out here.
